Are you thinking about becoming more physically active? Maybe you have even started. Sometimes taking the first step is hard! Here are some tips to help you develop new skills and get on the road to a more physically active life.
Remember to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
Take a realistic personal inventory of where you are, then decide where you want to be and make plans to get there. If you have been inactive for some time, set short-term goals like "I'm going to walk around the block at lunch time, 3 days per week". When you reach your goals comfortably then set new ones.
Begin with short activity sessions like slow 10 minute strolls each day. After a few days increase your walk time. In a few weeks you can work up to 30 minutes of moderate activity like brisk walking, yard work, dancing, swimming or tennis. You decide!
Most people experience some disruptions in their routine. Illness, job or family responsibilities, vacations and other things can knock you off course. Accept that these things will happen, and plan to get back on track as soon as possible. Make a commitment to take at least 30 minutes for yourself each day to stay active. Remember the sooner you start back, the easier it will be.
Many people enjoy physical activity more when they exercise with a friend. Set up a schedule and meet at the same time and place everyday. When you reach your goals, celebrate together!
